YouTube hired a new CEO as the former executive retired from the job to start “a new chapter” to focus on family and other personal affairs after 16 years of service at the company. Neal Mohan, the new YouTube CEO, was previously the chief product officer at the firm and supervised developments, including the embedding of Shorts and removing the dislike button to compete with TikTok.
Regarding Mohan’s interest in crypto assets, he had proposed the integration of metaverse-based content and content tokenizations via non-fungible tokens in February 2022. He emphasized how content creators could tokenize their assets and use them as a means of income as well as connect and engage with their audience. He posted a note back then mentioning: “Web3 also opens up new opportunities for creators. We believe new technologies like blockchain and NFTs can allow creators to build deeper relationships with their fans. Together, they’ll be able to collaborate on new projects and make money in ways not previously possible,”
The metaverse plans and content tokenization for YouTube were simply a proposal, but since Mohan is now leading the platform, the proposal may take effect soon. Also, the NFT skeptics who usually react quickly to NFTs news have been mainly neutral following the appointment of the new pro-NFT CEO. Considering that YouTube accounts for massive amounts of multimedia content on the internet, the news can contribute to the growth of the NFT market and investment in metaverse projects.
