AI technology is taking up the world rapidly, and so far, several countries have arranged collaborations with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. According to Cointelegraph, Sam Altman, CEO of ChatGPT, met with South Korea’s President, Yoon Suk Yeol. The CEO appreciated South Korea’s immense enthusiasm for ChatGPT upon its release stating that South Korea was one of the first adopters of the service and showed creativity in using the technology. Altman urged South Korea to play an active role in producing the chips needed for AI technology and expressed interest in investing in South Korean AI startups stating, “We are actively exploring avenues to increase our investment in Korean startups.” The CEO also suggested that South Korea focus on developing semiconductors and microchips required for AI. Altman requested the removal of unnecessary regulatory barriers in the way of AI advancements and concentration on setting international standards for deploying AI technology.

When questioned about collaborations with South Korean manufacturers, Altman confirmed ongoing negotiations with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix on producing memory chips. According to Nikkei Asia, Samsung accounts for 40% of the dynamic random access memory chip sector. Altman stated that OpenAI currently supplies memory chips from Taiwan, but soon the company will need South Korea for chip production as the ChatGPT project evolves. Alman also indicated that he is actively pursuing establishing an office in Japan and soon in other parts of the world. AI technology heavily relies on storing and transferring vast amounts of data, resulting in urgent demand for memory chips.

AI technology adoption in other countries

The widespread adoption of generative AI worldwide has made lawmakers speed up the regulation procedures regarding the safety implications of AI technology. The European Union is devising the Artificial Intelligence Act, and the enactment will take place in 2023. However, policymakers in the United States have drafted two bipartisan bills targeting the transparency and innovation issues in AI technology.
