Jack Dorsey unveils new social networking platform, Bluesky

The decentralized Twitter alternative Bluesky, founded by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, is making progress as its mobile application enters closed beta testing.

A limited number of users can download the invite-only Bluesky app from the Apple app store to try out the new social experience by signing up with an invite code.

The Bluesky iOS app, released on February 17, amassed around 2,000 installs as of February 28, according to a TechCrunch story. According to reports, Google Play does not yet have the app available for Android testers.

On Bluesky’s app store preview, the competitor software closely resembles Twitter in appearance and interface, including how handles, followers, posts, and replies are shown. The Bluesky app’s feed features likes, comments, and reposts in a similar way to Twitter. However, Bluesky will have some technical elements intended to set it apart from Elon Musk’s social media juggernaut, despite how much it resembles Twitter. The platform’s goal is to offer a decentralized social network protocol, which should keep user data free from interference from any authority, be it a corporate or a government.

Why do we need an alternative to Twitter?

Bluesky uses the AT protocol, a brand-new federated social network that incorporates concepts from cutting-edge decentralized technologies. The AT protocol, formerly known as the Authenticated Transfer protocol, or ADX, is Bluesky’s primary effort to enable a new method for servers to interact with one another, enabling people and organizations to self-host and have several websites instead of one.

As mentioned above, Bluesky published its initial code batch in early May 2022, only a few weeks before Jack Dorsey left Twitter’s board of directors. While Bluesky has continued beta testing, Twitter has run into some problems. Twitter experienced yet another significant outage on March 1 as thousands of users reported problems with Musk’s social networking platform. Over the course of five hours, the developers solved the issue.
